  • Notes
    • He served as sheriff of Lee County, Va. during the 1860's. Quite a versatile man, he worked with farms, timber, and trading, having accumulated considerable property, but his generosity and tendency to "secure" his neighbors' loans, etc., reduced his holdings in later years.

He carried on extensive correspondence with friends and relatives. It is to his prolific pen that we are now in-debted for the many names and dates recorded in his large notebook, which is still in possession of his son, Sampson Sage's family.

Billy again demonstrated his versatility when he was licensed to preach as a lay Methodist minister in Lee Co., Va. in 1878. He remarried at the age of seventy-one. His second wife was Lynda Ratliff, who was also an "elderly" lady.
