P.177 Court Order 12 Oct. 1778 Laughlin Fanning, an officer of the militia in this ounty took the oath of an officer as required by law, Order Book 4, P. 442

It is also reported in several pension requests images of which are included on Footnote.com. They identify him as a Ensign serving under a Lt. John Clay in the militia in 1780 in Mechlenburg or Halifax Co. VA. They apparently marched to Hillsborough to join up with General Gates just before the battle of Camden and later engagements in North Carolina and Virginia. The application mention the unit being at Yorktown. No place does it give a unit number.
